Not enough time to learn
Remember when Forrest was in rehab and he played ping pong? It was a fixed idea by the director, but Forrest was cast really late. Therefore, they didn’t have time to teach him how to play properly. So, what did they do? The real scene was filmed without the ball! Tom Hanks and the other guy simply swung their rackets as they would normally do and the ball was added using computer generated imagery. CGI ping pong, not bad! It was done so well that nobody really noticed it.
